How long is an Öğrenci İkamet İzni valid?
General information, not legal advice. For high-stakes decisions, confirm with the official institution in the next-step below, or consult a qualified Turkish lawyer.
Pending expert review. This fact is sourced but has not yet been reviewed by an independent legal expert. Treat as a starting point.
Duration depends on your study programme and enrolment route:
- Programme shorter than 1 year: the ikamet duration cannot exceed the programme length.
- Public-institution route (e.g. enrolled through a public agency or YTB scholarship): the ikamet can cover the entire study duration.
- Primary/secondary students whose costs are covered by a real or legal person: 1-year permits, renewable annually, with parent/guardian consent.
- Standard higher-education case: typically issued for 1 year and renewable.
Watch-outs
- If your study programme ends earlier than your permit expiry, the ikamet must be updated — don't assume it stays automatically valid until its printed expiry date.
- Programme extensions (e.g. thesis extension) require a corresponding ikamet extension — apply BEFORE current expiry, not after.
- The duration of student-permit time only counts at HALF toward the 8-year Uzun Dönem eligibility (per Law 6458 Art. 43).
Next step
Check your permit's printed expiry against your current academic calendar. If they don't align, apply for an update at your local İl Göç İdaresi directorate (Müdürlüğü) (Provincial Migration Directorate).
