How do I apply for a Turkish student visa?
General information, not legal advice. For high-stakes decisions, confirm with the official institution in the next-step below, or consult a qualified Turkish lawyer.

You must obtain a formal Student Visa (officially: Student – Education Visa) at the Turkish Embassy or Consulate that holds jurisdiction over your home address, before you travel. Applying after arrival is not permitted.
The Turkish e-Visa system is for tourism and short-term commerce only — it cannot be used to study. Attempting to enrol while holding a tourist e-Visa will result in administrative rejection by the university during registration.
Required documents:
| Requirement | Specification |
|---|---|
| Acceptance letter | Original from your Turkish university |
| Passport validity | At least 60 days beyond the visa's intended stay duration |
| Financial proof | Bank statements covering tuition + living costs |
| Travel health insurance | Minimum €30,000 coverage, including explicit repatriation and emergency transfer clauses |
| Visa fee | Nationality-based reciprocity, typically ~$160 USD single-entry / ~$190 USD multiple-entry |
| Biometric photographs | Recent, compliant passport-sized photos |
Watch-outs
- Visa fees are non-refundable regardless of the outcome. A refusal costs you the fee.
- Fees are typically payable only in exact cash or via money order payable to the Turkish Consulate General. Personal checks and credit cards are usually rejected — bring cash.
- The health insurance policy must include the repatriation clause explicitly. Standard "travel insurance" often doesn't — read the policy wording before purchase.
- Apply as soon as you receive your acceptance letter. Consular processing slows during the late-summer rush and can take several weeks at peak.
- An e-Visa is not a substitute. If a consultancy or agent tells you otherwise, they're wrong and you'll lose your university place.
Next step
Locate the Turkish Consulate with jurisdiction over your home address (the Turkish MFA website lists this). Book your in-person appointment immediately after receiving your acceptance letter. Bring exact cash for the visa fee.
