How much passport validity do I need to apply for my student residence permit?

Your passport (or passport-equivalent document) must be valid for at least 60 days beyond the residence permit duration you're requesting.
Worked example: if you're applying for a 1-year ikamet, your passport must remain valid for at least 1 year + 60 days from the day of application. A passport that expires in 12 months will not support a 1-year permit — it would support roughly a 10-month permit.
The rule is in the Öğrenci İkamet İzni document requirements section of the official Göç İdaresi brochure. The 60-day buffer is non-negotiable and the system enforces it at the form-generation step, not at the desk.
Watch-outs
- If your passport expires earlier than the 60-day buffer requires, your ikamet duration is capped at passport-validity-minus-60-days. You don't get the full year you wanted; you get whatever the maths allows.
- Renew the passport before applying for an extended ikamet if it's anywhere close to expiry. Renewing later doesn't retroactively extend a capped permit.
- Passport renewal through your embassy in Türkiye can take 4–12 weeks depending on country. Plan the embassy step into your timeline, not as an afterthought.
