What happens if I'm absent from Türkiye for too long while holding a work permit?
General information, not legal advice. For high-stakes decisions, confirm with the official institution in the next-step below, or consult a qualified Turkish lawyer.

The work permit is cancelled under Implementation Regulation 6735 Article 56(1)(h) if continuous absence exceeds:
- 6 months for employer-tied permits (Süreli).
- 1 year for Bağımsız or Süresiz permits.
Exceptions: health reasons and mandatory public service don't count toward these limits — but you have to document the reason if asked.
Watch-outs
- "Continuous" matters. Absences interrupted by short returns can reset the clock, but document these returns clearly with passport stamps. Verbal explanations don't reset anything.
- The residency-interruption rule for Uzun Dönem eligibility is a different concept with different thresholds. Don't mix the two.
- The health and public-service exceptions need evidence — medical records, official assignment orders. A cancellation triggered by absence is hard to reverse if the documentation isn't ready.
Next step
If you're planning an extended absence, document the reason in writing before you leave — medical records, official orders, family-emergency declarations. If the reason isn't health or mandatory public service, return to Türkiye before the threshold rather than after.
