When must I apply to extend (renew) my work permit?
General information, not legal advice. For high-stakes decisions, confirm with the official institution in the next-step below, or consult a qualified Turkish lawyer.
Pending expert review. This fact is sourced but has not yet been reviewed by an independent legal expert. Treat as a starting point.
Renewal applications have to be submitted within the 60 days before the current permit expires, and in any case before the expiry date. Applications submitted after expiry are rejected — full stop, no late processing.
Watch-outs
- Unlike ikamet renewal, a late work-permit renewal application has no grace period. With ikamet, a properly filed renewal earns you a receipt that protects your stay while you wait (permits-23). With work permits, late is dead.
- Once rejected for lateness, the next step is a brand-new first application — full documentation overhead, full evaluation, full processing time.
- A rejected renewal can also trigger Article 15(2)(ç) auto-cancellation logic if employment continues without authorisation. The financial fines in money-09 apply too.
Next step
Set two calendar reminders: 90 days before expiry to start gathering documents, and 60 days before expiry to submit the application. The 60-day mark is also when the renewal reminders tool will alert you if you've registered the date.
